FRAUD ALERT

IF YOU CAN ANSWER "YES" TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS, YOU COULD BE INVOLVED IN A FRAUD OR ABOUT TO BE SCAMMED!

  • Is the CHECK from an item you sold on the Internet, such as a car, boat, jewelry, etc?
  • Is the amount of the CHECK more than the item's selling price?
  • Did you receive the CHECK via an overnight delivery service?
  • Is the CHECK connected to communicating with someone by email?
  • Is the CHECK drawn on a business or individual account that is different from the person buying your item or product?
  • Have you been informed that you were the winner of a LOTTERY, such as Canadian, Australian, El Gordo, or El Mundo, that you did not enter?
  • Have you been instructed to either "WIRE", "SEND", OR "SHIP" MONEY, as soon as possible, to a large U.S. city or to another country, such as Canada, England, or Nigeria?
  • Have you been asked to PAY money to receive a deposit from another country such as Canada, England, or Nigeria?
  • Are you receiving PAY or COMMISSION for facilitating money transfers through your account?
  • Did you respond to an email requesting you to CONFIRM, UPDATE, OR PROVIDE your account information?

"PHISHING" SCHEMES  (see article below on internet fraud)

Many organizations have reported fraudulent, unsolicited e-mails involving a "phishing" attack directed at consumers.  The e-mails direct the recipients to a falsely duplicated web site and request the recipients to submit their debit card number, expiration date and Personal Identification Number (PIN).  The fraudulent sites look nearly identical to the real sites.  We strongly encourage you to never provide personal information-including debit card number or PIN-in response to an unsolicited request, whether it is over the phone or the Internet.

What is Direct Deposit???????

Direct Deposit is the electronic transfer of a payment from a company or organization into a checking or savings account of an employee, retiree, taxpayer, or shareholder.  With Direct Deposit,  you decide how to divide your pay among your accounts and it will be done automatically each payday.  Most employers will issue a payment stub that is identical to what you receive with a traditional paycheck.  It will show how much was deposited into your account and how much was taken out for taxes, insurance and other items.  So, why should you use Direct Deposit??

  • Payments made by Direct Deposit have never been lost.  In fact, you are more likely to have a problem with a check.
  • Direct Deposit is more confidential. A check passes through more hands than an electronic transfer.
  • You don't have to be in town for your money to be securely deposited into your account.
  • Direct Deposit gives you the access to your payments earlier than a check.  There is no waiting for a check to clear.
  • Income Tax refunds can be delivered to taxpayers within days rather than months. (Associated Press, 10/27/00).

See Your CU For A Motorcycle Loan
There's nothing quite like the sensation of feeling the open road on a motorcycle.  They're not just for the "rugged individualist" any more.  Many couples are enjoying the open road, either by themselves or joining clubs that plan rides across town or across the country.
If you're new to the world of motorcycles, your credit union urges you to research your first purchase carefully.  Experts say the most common mistake newcomers make is buying more motorcycle than they can handle.  You'll have the most fun and the most confident, comfortable, and safest ride on a bike that you  feel most  comfortable on. When you've made your decision, your credit union is ready to help with the financing.  Visit or call us today and let's talk about your options.

INTERNET FRAUD-DON'T GET PHISHED

Simple precautions can keep you from getting hooked by Internet "Phishing" Scams

Internet "phishing"scams are one of the fastest-growing frauds today.  Phishing typically involves a bogus e-mail message that uses legitimate materials, such as a credit union or other organization's Web site graphics and logos-the "look and feel"-in an attempt to entice e-mail recipients to provide personal financial details, such as account information, credit card and Social Security numbers.

Financial institutions, government agencies, retailers, credit card companies and many other organizations have seen their Web site graphics, including corporate logos and other materials "stolen" by fraudsters intent on tricking individuals into divulging personal information by responding to an official-looking, but entirely bogus, e-mail.

Like many cons and scams, phishing preys on the unwary.  Here's how credit union members can fight back against this fraud:

TAKE SOME SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS

  • Never respond to an unsolicited e-mail that asks for personal financial information.
  • Report anything suspicious to the proper authorities.  Alert the organization identified in the suspect e-mail though a Web address or telephone number that you know is legitimate.
  • Contact the Internet Crime Compliant Center at www.ifccfbi.gov -a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center-if you think you have received a phishing e-mail or have been directed to a phishy-looking Web site.

STOP LOOK AND CALL

  • Stop.  Resist the urge to immediately respond to a suspicious e-mail-and to provide the information requested-despite urgent or exaggerated claims.
  • Look. Read the text of the e-mail several times and ask yourself why the information requested would really be needed.
  • Call. Telephone the organization identified, using a number that you know to be legitimate.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN "PHISHED"

  • Immediately contact those organizations for which you provided the information.
  • Contact the three major credit bureaus and request that a fraud alert be placed on your credit report.  The credit bureaus and phone numbers are:  Equifax,1-800-525-6285;Experian, 1-888-397-3742; and TransUnion, 1-800-680-7289.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or 1-877-382-4357.

Credit union members should never provide their personal information in response to an unsolicited telephone call, fax, letter, e-mail or Internet advertisement.

ATM SAFETY AND SECURITY

The convenience available with Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) carries an increased need for security and personal caution.  ATMs can be located just about anywhere, and they are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

To protect your identity and to ensure your personal safety, it makes good sense to exercise caution when using an ATM.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
  • Protect your ATM cards and report lost or stolen cards immediately.
  • Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN).  ATM fraud is most often committed by individuals who know the ATM cardholder.  Do not give the number to anyone and don't write your PIN on your card or keep it in your wallet. Avoid using numbers that are easily identified (birth date, etc.)
  • Never leave your receipt behind.  Shred receipts before discarding them.
  • For personal safety, minimize your time at the machine.  Have your ATM card ready when you approach the machine and be ready to enter your PIN number.
  • Count your money later, not at the ATM
  • Give people ahead of you space to conduct their transactions.  When you use the ATM, make sure no one watches you key in your PIN.
